Making Mealtimes Easier for Neurodivergent Children
Gentle, practical support to help your child eat with more confidence and make mealtimes calmer for everyone.
Feeding challenges are common in neurodivergent children, from strong food preferences to avoiding certain textures, colours, or smells. These difficulties can make mealtimes stressful and leave you worried about nutrition — but you’re not alone, and it’s not your fault.
I’m Dr Kirsty Porter, a children’s dietitian with over 16 years’ experience supporting families across the UK and Ireland. I help parents navigate neurodivergent feeding challenges with calm, realistic strategies that work in real life — so mealtimes feel easier, more positive, and far less stressful.
Why Feeding Can Be Stressful for Neurodivergent Children
Fussy eating is common in neurodivergent children, especially in early childhood. Sometimes it’s part of their sensory or developmental differences, but other times it can feel particularly challenging for families. There are a few reasons your neurodivergent child might struggle with food, such as:
- Avoid certain textures, colours, or smells, or refuse new foods
- Eat only a very limited range of foods
- Find changes to routine (like nursery meals or eating out) very distressing
- Make mealtimes stressful, leaving you worried about nutrition and growth
- Have been labelled “picky” or “fussy,” even though it’s more complex
What looks like “being difficult” is often your child’s way of coping with sensory or routine challenges. With gentle support, mealtimes can start to feel calmer, more positive, and easier for everyone.
Work with Dr. Kirsty
I use a calm, no-pressure approach that helps children feel safe and curious around food. No stress, no forcing bites, no “clean plate” rules. We’ll work together to reduce mealtime stress, introduce new foods at your child’s pace, and create simple routines that help everyone feel more relaxed.
